The draft tube overhead handling equipment can be required in an overhead crane configuration if it operates inside the power house or in a monorail or gantry if it operates from the outside of the powerhouse. Typically if gates are handled, the monorail configuration will not be selected.

The draft tube overhead handling equipment services a whole series of gates or stop logs gates and is not permanently attached to one of them. The draft tube overhead handling equipment is normally provided with a lifting beam. The lifting beam allows the picking and releasing of the stop logs or gates when submerged in water. The opening and releasing of the hooks provided on the lifting beam can be manually operated or motorized.
Although draft tube handling equipment are exposed to the extreme load conditions generated by motor stall torque in case of dynamic asymmetrical jamming of the gate or stop log in the embedded guides during lifting, some users will not require the equipment to be designed to these maximum constraints since their operation is not as critical as that of intake or spillway gates.
