Typically gates, stop logs, trash racks & embedded parts are used in the flow of water going through the intake or spillway sluices.

Gates or stop logs have the same purpose which is to close the flow of water. Stop logs are typically smaller than gates ; stop logs are used where the operation is occasional and not repetitive, when spilling is required from the top rather than from the bottom and when opening or closing is not required in an emergency situation.

Gates offer a much faster operation especially if they are permanently tied to a hoisting mechanism. In modern hydropower constructions, stop logs are mostly used for isolating the installed gates for maintenance purposes.

Trash racks are used upstream of the whole process to restrain foreign objects in the flow of water.

Embedded parts are the parts provided to guide the stop logs, trash racks or gates when lifting or lowering. Embedded parts include anchors provided for installation prior to the original pouring of concrete and guides, seals and lintels which are installed further to the concrete original pour and following their installation cast in place in a secondary concrete pour.
